Easter Adventure to the source of the River Browney

Here’s a challenge of an outing, pedalling to 1000’ above sea level to discover where the River Browney emerges from the moorland tops. We’ll initially leave our river in its lowlands at Malton for a warm up along the railway path to Lanchester where we will start our ascent on quiet roads via Newbiggin and Broadmeadows, across the A68 to Oxenlaw. Almost at our highest point we’ll take the track through Red House Farm onto the Waskerley Way where we can gaze at the youthful Browney. Our return is relatively easy, down the WW and we’ll have a stop at Hownsgill Farm for a cuppa and some lunch. Please bring snacks with you as you may feel peckish and if the cafe is very busy we may need to continue further on for a stop.

This is a challenging ride and particularly hilly on the outward leg. We will follow sections of quieter road and off road paths largely so a hybrid bike is most suitable, although a mountain or robust road bike would also be ok. It is suitable for more experienced riders or for those ready for a bigger challenge.

In order for the ride to leave promptly, please be punctual so we can carry out bike checks, etc. prior to us setting off. Expect to be out for 4-5 hours. Come suitably dressed for the weather conditions and the altitude as we will be hitting 1000’ and bring a spare inner tube that fits your tyres,
