As it's International Women's Day on 8th March, we would like you to join us and celebrate the occasion with a visit to the Amy Johnson Museum at Sewerby Hall in Bridlington ON SATURDAY, 7TH MARCH, 2015! Amy Johnson CBE, (1 July 1903 – 5 January 1941) was a pioneering English aviatrix. Flying solo or with her husband, Jim Mollison, Johnson set numerous long-distance records during the 1930s. Johnson flew in the Second World War as a part of the Air Transport Auxiliary where she died during a ferry flight . Amy achieved worldwide recognition when, in 1930, she became the first woman to fly solo from Britain, to Australia. Flying her "Jason" Gipsy Moth, she left Croydon, south of London, on 5 May of that year and landed in Darwin, Australia on 24 May after flying 11,000 miles (18,000 km). Her aircraft for this flight can still be seen in the Science Museum in London. She received the Harmon Trophy as well as a CBE in recognition of this achievement, and was also honoured with the No. 1 civil pilot's licence under Australia's 1921 Air Navigation Regulations. On the 1st June 1936 Sewerby Hall was opened to the public for the first time, by the aviation heroin, Amy Johnson. During World War II the Hall was converted into a hospital to accommodate war wounded returning from France. Today, the Hall as a special section devoted to the heroic flying achievements of Amy Johnson, which includes many trophies and memorabilia. We'll cycle over to Bridlington, using the country lanes that are the backdrop of many a Hockney painting and cycle along the coast to Sewerby. There will be time for a bite to eat at the Hall, before we return to Driffield. Please remember to bring money for refreshments. There is also charge of £2.50 to enter the Hall. At around 40 miles, this promises to be a ride full of delights! We always advise you wear a helmet and check the forecast to wear suitable clothing on the day. Please bring a water bottle. Check you have inner tube, puncture repair kit and pump packed for the journey, should you be unfortunate enough to get a puncture. Should we have to cancel our ride due to adverse weather conditions, we will endeavour to contact you beforehand. However, there will always be a Breeze Champion at the start venue. We look forward to seeing you! Julie, Justine & Emma xxx
