Darkmoor is a semi-organised through-the-night bike ride over Dartmoor. Starting in Plymouth, the route takes you to Yelverton, Tavistock, Lydford, Okehampton, Moretonhampstead, Princetown, Dousland, Cornwood, Yealmpton and Brixton before returning to Plymouth, 100 miles later. This is a challenging ride - over 100 miles long, with 2 464 metres of climbing. Some of the climbs, especially out of Moretonhampstead, can be a bit steep. The ride sets off from Cap'n Jaspers on the Plymouth Barbican at 21h00, under a full moon, and finishes back where it started on Sunday morning. It isn't a race, but the slow group usually maintains an average speed of around 12mph, while the faster riders go significantly quicker. You can go as slow or as fast as you prefer, but if you're going to ride slowly you may want to bring along a few friends to keep you company. This is a non-supported ride, meaning there is no broom wagon to sweep stragglers up. You will need to be self-sufficient, and you will need lights that will last at least 8 hours. Spare inner tubes, a pump and tools to effect any roadside repairs are essential too, while a healthy dosage of masochism certainly would help. You and you alone are responsible for your own safety and well-being on the ride.
