Cycle Saunter to Seaham
Sat 20th July 2024 9.30am 23 miles
Start Sherburn at Durham City Gymnastics Club (formerly Sherburn Leisure Centre) DH6 1QX. Access to car park from B1283 (not housing estate).
This ride is suitable for those wanting to build up cycling confidence as well as for more experienced riders seeking a relaxed trip with a bit of chat. A hybrid bike is the best choice but a mountain bike or more chunky tyred road style bike would also do just fine. We will cover a mix of off and on road routes but will be avoiding clarty stuff as much as possible.
We will leave Sherburn Village, passing the primary school and along Cookshold Lane. We’ll pedal through Littletown and Haswell and then along NCN1 and its recent improvements near South Hetton. Then we’ve the road to somewhere and the stunning downhill to Noses Point. At Seaham we’ll take a look at the Ray Lonsdale sculptures of ‘Tommy’ and ‘The Coxswain’, breathe in the sea air and refuel at the harbour for the ride back. We’ll return via Seaton, Eppleton and along the Hetton railway path via Pittington.
In order for the ride to leave promptly, please be punctual so we can carry out bike checks, etc. prior to us setting off. Please make sure your bike is in working condition and bring a spare tube to fit your tyres. Expect to be out for about 5 hours in total.
As always we can’t predict the weather so please dress suitably. You are better to be overdressed as you can always take layers off.
For any queries please use ‘message ride creator’. For any last minute cancellations on the day please add a note to the ‘conversation’ in the ride before cancelling.
If the weather is poor we will only contact you if we are cancelling the ride and will do so no later than 8.30am on the day by putting a message in the ‘conversation’ tab in the ride. You should receive a notification by email if there is a message. If you have not heard from us we are still riding.
