NB: THIS IS A RESCHEDULED RIDE NOW RUNNING ON 27/03/23 DUE TO POOR WEATHER FORECAST ON ORIGINAL DATE OF THURS 23RD MARCH.
This is a beautiful scenic, 'out and back again' ride of 25 miles. It takes us south up the Conwy Valley - along a mix of quiet country lanes and the slightly busier B 5106 - to the wonderful Gwydir Castle where we make our turn to head north once again via Llanrwst.
The route passes through the lovely country villages of Henryd, Rowen, Pontwgan & Llanbedr y Cennin, before joining the B road in Tal y Bont and heading south to Adventure Parc Snowdonia, where we can stop for toilets (and a short break). The route then continues along the road towards Trefriw, passing by the popular Woolen Mill, and continuing through the village to arrive at Gwydir Castle - where we may hope to see one of the resident Peacocks!
It is at the Castle that we change direction, heading east across the flood plain and over the ancient Pont Fawr (passing the iconic ivy-covered tea shop of Tu-hwnt-i'r-bont, sadly closed until late March!), and take a left onto the busier A road to head through historical market town of Llanrwst. Opportunities here for a safe gathering where refreshments can be consumed (the Spa is across from the market place is there for anyone wanting to grab a snack & drink).
We turn off the main road fairly quickly to go past Llanrwst railway station and cross the river Conwy once again on the wonderful suspension bridge of Gowers. We then head North West to Trefriw on the smooth tarmac of the brief-but-blissful traffic-free road. Arriving in the village we take a right back onto the B road in order to make our return journey home, pretty much retracing the same route home, although this time we miss out the village of Llanbedr in order to avoid the hill climb...instead the route continues on the B5106 to Caerhun and then turns left to Pontwgan.
A cafe stop is planned for our return journey
Note on pace:
Although this is a ride that is classified as 'challenging due to its length and a undulations, my intention is to go at an unhurried pace, one where we can all enjoy the cycling, scenery, and company as we go. There will be ample places to stop and gaze, to catch our breath, and to take snacks.
Note on hills:
It's worth saying that there are a few gradual up-hill sections, though only one that is really
horribly steep (though thankfully this is a short section) - but please be assured that there is no shame in getting off and walking this bit!
