Beckenham Green, diagonally across from Beckenham Junction Station

We’ll meet in Beckenham Green at 10am and ride a 33 mile circuit that goes through several parks and green spaces in South East London. We'll keep clear of traffic as much as possible, but a few sections of busy road and junctions are practically unavoidable. Beckenham Place Park is next, for a very brief stop at the Mansion Café & loos. Then on to Norman Park, for a quick 1.2 mile circuit. A hilly ride to South Norwood Country Park follows, via a 'secret' wood, cycle routes & playing fields. Next is Crystal Palace Park, over quiet residential streets, but we'll need to carry our bikes up the stairs over a tram line. Then on to Dulwich Park. Along the way we'll have to negotiate a very steep downhill descent, which mountain bike riders may attempt 'off-road'. Risky, but exhilarating. A non-stop circuit through the beautiful Dulwich Park sets us up for lunch at Brockwell Hall, Brockwell Park. However, on the way, we'll pause briefly at a 'surprise' location. After a half-hour break, we begin the return leg, passing through the other half of Brockwell Park, heading for Peckham Rye Park & Common, via North Dulwich. We’ll ride on to Ladywell Fields, where we’ll join Waterlink Way, and find the northwest entrance of Beckenham Place Park. But before that, we’ll need to carry our bikes over a railway bridge. A different path through BPP leads us to the roads back to our starting point. Pace approx. 12-15mph, but there will be hills, with some short, steep climbs and descents along the way. Surfaces will vary from paved to unpaved roads and paths, off-road trails, gravel/stoney sections and grassy slopes! A well-maintained mountain bike or hybrid with good brakes and off-road/adventure tyres would be best suited for this ride. Apart from having some off-road riding experience, riders will be expected to carry their own tools, inner tubes, chain repair kit, first aid kit, etc., and know how to use them. Though we will always stop to help any rider who experiences physical or technical difficulties. Finally, please be aware that some of these parks host events that could prevent entry to cyclists, non-ticket holders, or provide partial access only. Under these circumstances, we’ll be forced to ride around or perhaps walk through. If this is an issue, please check with the parks above before you decide to join this ride.
