Starting point

BS14 0JZ

Hengrove Park Leisure Centre, The Boulevard, Bristol.

Once out of the city, this ride to Chew Valley Lake follows a pretty route along quiet country lanes. There are steep descents and hills so we recommend joining the ride with a good level of fitness.

We’ll meet at Hengrove Park Leisure Centre at 9am for a quick bike check before departing. There is secure parking at the leisure centre however you will have to pay for it. It is possible to park on the residential roads around Whitchurch but do so at your own risk. Anyone wishing to have a pre-ride coffee should meet at the cafe inside from 8.30am.

We’ll head out of Bristol via Whitchurch passing through scenic villages like Compton Dando, Publow and pass under the dramatic Pensford viaduct before heading out towards the very lovely Chew Valley Lake. We will stop for tea and cake at Chew Valley Lake Cafe (this is a little over our half way point). Fuelled by cake, we will make our return to our start point via Chew Magna. This is a challenging ride on mostly quiet roads, however there are hills and some of the road surfaces are bumpy (country lanes with some potholes!) There are as many downhill descents as there are hilly climbs but the beautiful views (and cake) are worth the effort!

The total length of the ride is around 20 miles. It’s perfect for anyone looking to push themselves a bit further and try some hills.

We'd recommend you bring water and a snack to top up energy levels along the way. Wearing a helmet is strongly advised, though not essential. Please
bring some money to buy refreshments at the cafe. Please also bring a spare inner tube and clothes that are appropriate for the weather on that day. Don’t forget…. Breeze are on a mission to spread the word about their rides, and need your help. If you introduce one friend who goes on to take part in a Breeze ride, you’ll receive a Breeze water bottle, introduce a second friend, you’ll be the proud owner of one of their swish Breeze Buffs, and introduce a third friend and Breeze will send you £15 of Love2Shop vouchers.
