Pedalling Squares
The Old Brassworks
Quality Row
Swalwell
The route:- Leave Pedalling Squares and cycle on the banks of the south side of the Tyne to Newburn. Cross over the bridge and climb through Newburn to the top of Throckley fells and then to Ponteland. We then cycle into Northumberland through Ogle, Whalton, Meldon, Hartburn, Scots Gap and Wallington. We then cycle to Kirkharle, Little Bavington, joining the Reivers route 10 to Matfen. On the way to Matfen we climb ‘the Ryals’ a challenging climb. Stop at Matfen café for a well earned snack etc. We return to Pedalling Squares via Stamfordham, Throckley and Newburn, over the bridge and back along the south side of the Tyne.
This is a 58 mile cycle ride, some off road but mainly on quiet country roads with some fantastic scenery, the ride is suitable for any type of bike but you must be able to cycle 10-12 miles per hour and be prepared for the challenge of ‘the Ryals’ plus the 58 miles. The cycle ride is restricted to 20 people and is a no drop ride.
Your cycle needs to be in good condition and you should carry two spare inner tubes with you as we do get punctures and it is quicker and easier for the group to just replace your inner tube.
