Starting point

West Yorkshire

Starting at Stanley Ferry Marina we use the new Wakefield link road cycle path to take us to Doncaster Road where we use the crossings and cycle path to Oakenshaw Lane.
Travelling along Oakenshaw Lane this on road section is .5mile.

Turning left we enjoy the abundance of nature through Walton Nature Reserve formerly Walton Colliery. We exit the reserve turning RIGHT onto Shay Lane following this for .5mile.

At the brow of the short incline (opposite The New Inn Pub) we turn LEFT onto a cycle track. This is a lovely 2.5 mile track leading us through the woodlands and disused canal routes, passing Walton Golf Club.

We make our way carrying on cycle tracks to Anglers Park and a loop of the lake before stopping for a quick brew at the café.

Setting of, we loop the lake again in the opposite direction and retrace our route back through Walton Nature Reserve (with the option to add a 1 mile with a loop of the reserve) and onto Doncaster Road.

Crossing over Doncaster Road we cycle up the side of the Heath to Heath Village and onto Kirkthorpe Lane which is a .5mile road section through this ancient village.

We pick up the track, turning LEFT that takes us through the Southern Washlands and onto the Calder Canal.
We negotiate the ‘Blue Bridge’ using the cycle ramp and loop round the Southern Washland ponds enjoying beautiful scenery and calm of the Washlands.

Exiting the Washland onto the canal side we cross the bridge and take the RIGHT track following along side the canal back to Stanley Ferry.

The route is approximately 18 miles. There will be an option to cycle a little further if you feel up to it. Approximately 4/6 miles.
