Explore this lovely flat green corridor route going along the north bank of the River Tyne on the newly refurbished cycle path (part of route NCN 72). The old coal Waggonway passes by the birthplace of engineer and inventor George Stephenson - a quaint cottage with beautiful garden, maintained by The National Trust and should be free from potholes now! It's a flat tree-lined route great for nature watching and enjoying being out in the fresh air.
Most of the route is traffic free although there will be a short ride along a minor quiet road to get to the waggonway. Suitable for all bike types and great for beginners or those just getting back to cycling after a winter break
We'll travel at a steady pace and aim to get to Wylam in time for the grand reopening of the Wylam Waggonway at 11am. Once the ribbons have been cut we'll join other cyclists to saunter back to Newburn along the same route.
Clothing suitable for the weather, helmet, water bottle and some cash for refreshments
First-timers welcome!
