This route starts at Hike & Bike Hub, before we follow the shared path alongside the Gala Water and Borders Railway and then Sustrans route 1 to Melrose via Darnick. Short road section from Melrose up through Newstead before turning into the closed road leading to the viewpoint at Trimontium. Return route via Melrose town centre, stopping for coffee and cake (or ice cream!) and back via the shared path to Galashiels.
Most of the route is along the shared cycle path, Sustrans route 1 between Galashiels and Melrose. After crossing a busy road (on foot), there is a short on-road section through Darnick Village before rejoining the shared path. The route follows a tarmac track alongside the Tweed to Annay Road .Short road section (Annay Road) through Melrose and uphill through Newstead Village before the closed road to Trimontium. Return route will have a short road section past Jedburgh Abbey and through Melrose before following the shared path back to Galashiels.
We can stop at any point along the road as required! Good places to stop along the way are Tweedbank Railway Station, alongside the Tweed near the Chain Bridge and at the Trimontium viewing platform. And the refreshment stop in Melrose of course!
All riders are advised to wear a helmet and to be prepared for all weathers given the autumn we are experiencing! Please bring a spare inner tube and mini pump for your bike. You may also want to bring water or juice for the ride. Please also bring money for the refreshment stop in Melrose.
This is a mostly easy ride with some short sections on the road. There is a short climb through Newstead on the road, and we will ride at a pace suitable for everyone.
