About the route
International Womens Day - following some of Lincolns Women of Note!
Starting at Unicorn Tree Books (Owned and run by an independently minded woman - your very own BreezeChamp melanie!) we will then cycle gently uphill stopping off at The Collection & Usher to get our breath back... and to acknowledge that housed within is some of the work of Lincolnshire sculptor Ella Curtois ...
After a breather we shall continue up lindum hill and swing around into the cathedral yard and nip down to The Old Palace ... formerly the Old Bishops Palace and where Penelope Fitzgerald author of 'The Blue Flower' and 'The Bookshop' was born.
From here we shall cycle through the Cathedral Gates and into Castle Square where we gaze upon the Castle and think of Empress Matilda's forces who battled and besieged in our city and took captive King Stephen here allowing Empress Matilda to rule for a short while...
From the castle square we shall then head back down the hill and towards Carholme road where the author Mary Mackie lived as a child and young woman - author of the brilliant book 'The People of the Horse' - all about Queen Boudicca and her Iceni people - her books have been translated in 20 different languages and so a true International Woman!
At Carholme road we turn back to Brayford Wharf where we finish our Books, Battles and Brilliant Women ride with a stop for Coffee at the Costa in Lincoln Odeon and probably Cake or Ben & Jerry's Ice cream!
