Billie Fleming, has a unique place in the history of cycling. In 1938, she cycled every day and set the women's world record for the greatest distance cycled in a single year. A year's mileage record is an awesome achievement. To cycle every day for a year, often alone, in all weathers, takes great strength of character as well as health and fitness. Organising female riders to cycle the distance Billie cycled every day for a year, will be a fitting tribute to this trail blazer of women's cycling. Billie's primary aim was to get women cycling: the tribute ride aims to deliver Billie's legacy by encouraging women to join in for a stage of the years' ride near them. It will also demonstrate that women of all ages love cycling, that we're up for a challenge, and we're self sufficient, hardy souls. Over seventy years after Billie Fleming completed her near 30,000 mile ride to raise awareness for the health benefits of women's cycling, a tribute ride is being organised to continue her goal. The Billie Fleming Tribute Ride will start on January 1st, 2015, with stage one being a ride from Westminster to Aylesbury, and then on to Mill Hill. Every day for the entirety of 2015 there will be a stage, to be ridden by groups of local female cyclists.
