Ambleside

If you’re fairly confident on your bike and ready to broaden your cycling horizons, our Steady rides are ideal. At a comfortable pace, and possibly with some modest hills along the way, rides take place on mainly quiet roads with plenty of sights along the way. Rides are between 6 and 20 miles long, at a moderate pace of between 7 and 10 miles an hour. From our meeting point, outside Ambleside C of E Primary School next to Rothay Park, we will follow an undulating route along the course of the River Rothay from Ambleside to Grasmere and back.  The ride takes you through green pastures and ancient woodland as well as along the shores of Rydal and Grasmere lakes.  Panoramic, breath taking views change at each corner and over each hill - there are one or two but walking and stopping for rests means more time to enjoy the scenery. Quiet roads and purpose built traffic free cycle paths are used for the entire route.  In Grasmere there will be time to have a picnic or ice cream in the park, visit the famous Grasmere Gingerbread shop or relax with a coffee in one of the numerous tea shops, before retracing our steps back to Ambleside. Bike Hire is available from Ghyllside Cycles, Ambleside. Please ring 01539 433592 to book in advance and collect from the shop. Please state that the shire is for Sky Ride Local. Bus services 505,555 and 599 run between Kendal, Windermere, Ambleside, Grasmere & Keswick.
