Starting point

Midlothian
EH22 2AW

This ride starts at Dalkeith High School and picks up the shared path to Eskbank and then we pick up the entire west line to Penicuik. The section between Rosewell and Auchendinny has recently been refurbished and offers a much better surface for cycling. We will take a wee detour to see the frogspawn at Valleyfield Pond, then cross onto Bridge Street and into Cairnbank Drive to enter a gravelly section for a few 100m into Penicuik House estate to visit 'Fairy Land'. We then return with a loop up Kirkhill Road and pick up the Old Railway line at Harpers Brae, retracing the line back to the start, with a coffee in Rosewell.
Suitable for road bikes and also gravel bikes and hybrid and bikes bikes. The very short gravelly section into Fairy Land could be walked if required if you have a road bike.

We will be cycling on mainly traffic free shared paths with a couple of short road sections at Penicuik. We will likely pass walkers, dogs and horses and maybe tiny humans on balance bikes, so please stay safe and keep other users safe.

We will stop for coffee on the way back (about 15 miles in) at Rosewell.

Please bring the following with you: Bike in good and safe working order and well maintained, a helmet, spare inner-tube / puncture repair kit, a bike lock if you have one, layers (including a waterproof incase of rain), card or cash payment if you want to buy anything at our café stop. We don't leave anyone behind but if you find yourself in a position of being unable to continue with the ride for any reason, for example in the event of a puncture / mechanical that cannot be fixed at the roadside, then you need a plan for getting back home. And of course you will need a water bottle or two, some snacks just incase we dont stop for coffee (for what ever reason) and loads of chat!

We never leave anyone behind
