Starting point

Oxfordshire

We make our way through to Shellinford and cross the A417 and onto Gainnfield where a left turn will take us to our crossing point of the A420 and into Buckland, we then make it to the Bampton Road and enjoy a lovely stretch of down hill (payback comes later). After our coffee in Bampton we then do the Downton Mile taking in such sightes as Mrs Crawleys House, the Dog and Duck and The cottage hospital before making our way home via Faringdon (a climb here) and Fernham

Even if you are not a fan of the TV period drama Downtown you will probably still enjoy this ride out to Bampton which was chosen for the outside scenes for the Series (a long way from Yorkshire!!!)

We will be on country roads and lanes and during our visit to Bampton there will be a few short stretches where we have to walk our bikes.

The are a couple of good cafes in Bampton, but sadly Mrs Patmore will not be serving us tea

Don’t forget a full water bottle with your favourite thirst quencher. For all our rides you should bring at least a spare inner tube and a pump. If your wheels are bolted-on then a spanner that fits the wheel nuts is also essential. Helmets are not compulsory but most definitely recommended. You should dress appropriately for the weather, (GLOVES) and consider bringing your mobile phone along with cash or debit card for the refreshment stop. Some place’s only take card payments.

We welcome newcomers to our ride group, but we want you to enjoy the ride so please consider the route, distance and terrain. If this ride is likely to be a bit difficult then check out our other rides which we put on for newbies and returners and join us on something easier. Keeping checking this web site as there lots of short rides coming in 2025
