A Suffragette Trail to Esh Winning’s old railway Station

Summer evening ride to Esh Winning’s old train station

Join us for this short ride which is part of our weekly summer series of Thursday evening rides in the Durham area during May, June and July. These rides are suitable for those new or returning to cycling to build up confidence and stamina over the weeks, while enjoying the summer evenings and good company.

Our destination is Esh Winning where we’ll discover more about the young firebrand suffragette, Connie Ellis, who taught at Esh Winning School. She was a young suffragette who in 1914 was responsible for burning down the local train station..

Our ride will largely follow the Deerness and Lanchester Valley Railway Paths with a middle, on road section, between Esh Winning and Langley Park, including a cheeky climb between the 2 valleys. The railway lines are generally good quality so a hybrid bike is most suitable, although a mountain or gravel bike will do the job nicely too.

In order for the ride to leave promptly, please be punctual so we can carry out bike checks, etc. prior to us setting off. Please make sure your bike is in working condition, bring a spare tube to fit your tyres and have lights in case the eve is dreary. We should be out for a couple of hours and there will be the option to stop for a cuppa/drink once back.

If you cannot make it please cancel your place using the option in let’s ride.

If there is poor weather we may need to cancel the ride and will do so no later than 5.30pm on the day. If you have not heard from us the ride is going ahead.
