Our rides start at 6:45pm every Monday from Straw’s Bridge, Ilkeston. They are free to join, supported by Erewash Borough Council and led by trained volunteer Ride Leaders. Just bring your bike, wear suitable clothing for cycling and the weather, and bring a drink if you would like one.

We offer three levels of ride — Newbies, Regulars and Experienced — so there is something to suit a wide range of abilities. If possible, please let us know which group you would like to join.

The Newbies group is the perfect place to start if you are new to cycling, returning after a break, or simply looking to build confidence. The route is around 6 miles and fairly flat, with plenty of time to complete it at a relaxed and comfortable pace. It is designed to feel gentle, enjoyable and supportive, with no pressure at all. Many riders begin here before moving on to the Regulars group when they feel ready.

The Regulars group usually rides around 10 miles, with routes varied from week to week to keep things interesting. This group is ideal for riders who want to build fitness, confidence and time in the saddle without feeling out of their depth. You do not need to be especially fast or super fit — just willing to give it a go. It is a friendly, encouraging group, and everyone understands what it feels like to be starting or getting back into cycling.

For those with a higher level of fitness or more cycling experience, we also have an Experienced group. This group usually covers around 15 miles and gives you a little more scope to ride at your own effort level, while still stopping at points to regroup. It can be a steady ride or more of a workout, depending on how you choose to ride it.

All rides last around 90 minutes and mainly use cycle paths, bridleways and traffic-free routes, so there is very little road riding and minimal traffic to deal with. If we do use roads to link trails, it is usually only for a short distance on very quiet roads. The pace is always managed carefully to keep the group together and make sure nobody is left struggling or left behind.

Our routes usually explore areas such as Shipley Park, the Erewash Valley, Strelley and Cossall, making the most of some of the best traffic-free riding in the area. We also stop part way round for refreshments and a chat, which is all part of the friendly atmosphere.

We know that coming along for the first time can feel a little daunting, but the whole focus of these rides is on enjoyment, encouragement and helping people feel comfortable. You may be surprised how quickly your confidence and cycling ability improve.

Please bring a drink and wear clothing suitable for the weather forecast. Most importantly, come along knowing that you will be welcomed, supported and never left behind.

We vary the route each week to keep every ride fresh and enjoyable. Most of our rides are entirely off-road on smooth tarmac paths or firm stone trails, taking in some of the area’s best traffic-free routes, including the Nutbrook Trail, Shipley Park, canal towpaths, Bennerley Viaduct and the trails out towards Strelley.

There are occasionally a few very short sections on quiet roads where needed to link the traffic-free trails together.

We usually stop part way round for refreshments and a chat, often with our legendary homemade cherry choc chip flapjack to keep everyone going.

All you need is a roadworthy bike such as a hybrid, gravel bike or mountain bike, a helmet, suitable clothing and a spare inner tube for your bike. Don’t worry if you do not have an inner tube for your first ride — we can advise you on the right one to buy. E-bikes are very welcome too.

We especially welcome newbies!
