Starting point

Lanarkshire
ML12 6AE

This is a reasonably challenging but very rewarding route, along quiet roads through the rolling Borders and Lanarkshire hills.

The ride starts in the market town of Biggar, which has a real medieval feel. We head down Biggar High Street for a short distance before turning onto the back road to Elsrickle. After a short climb to cross the A721 we head along lovely country lanes through the hamlets of Walston and Dunsyre and then on to Newbigging.

We then join the A721 again for a few miles before turning off and heading over to Auchengray. After climbing up to Auchengray, we travel through the moor lands to Wilsontown (the iron town).

We then leave Wilsontown and through the peat fields and lochs to Carnwath.

In Carnwath, we have a number of options to refuel, including the famous Apple Pie Bakery.

We then head into the much lusher, green farmlands through Quothquan, Cormiston and onto the road back to Biggar.

The route is predominantly on quiet roads, but there are a small number of miles on busier roads - unfortunately, this is unavoidable, but is kept to an absolute minimum.

There are a couple of sections where we need to cross the A721 The Ride Leader will provide ample warning and instruction on how to negotiate this.
