Starting point

Glamorgan

A lovely mostly off-road route along the Taff Trail to Abercynon then across to Trelewis and the Taff Bargoed Park, along the lake and up to the Summit rock climbing centre for delicious cakes and coffees before returning along the same route.

We’ll meet at the free car park which is located on Forest Farm Road CF14 7JJ. To find the car park from the M4 (Junction 32), follow signs to Whitchurch, pass the Hollybush Pub on the left. At the roundabout take the 4th exit along Velindre Road. Keep going down the hill, single track road, approx. 200yds after passing Cardiff Harlequins sports ground the track bends right, the car park is just after the bend on your right before you get to the Warden’s Centre. Unfortunately there are no facilities here.

From here we will ride north along the Taff Trail following the course of the River Taff for the majority of the ride. We will pass through Ynysangharad Park in Pontypridd continuing on to Quaker’s Yard before joining Sustrans route 47 to Taff Bargoed Country Park in Trelewis.

Parc Taf Bargoed is a hidden gem, a haven for wildlife, combining views of the imposing hills with a gentle river path. It's a centre for outdoor activities, from walking to kayaking, fishing to biking, and has a rock climbing centre too!

The route is mainly shared path, but there are some road sections along the way. One or two small hills on the ride, but mainly easy-going. Suitable for most types of bike, it can be a little uneven with tree roots in places, so suspension is a bonus!

At the Taff Bargoed country park we follow the path to the top of the lake where there is a café and toilets at the Summit rock climbing centre.
