We cycle through Paddington so frequently, as a way through other routes or even as a destination, but never really take the time to explore its history. This is an easygoing ride, where we spend time around its greens and waters to appreciate some artwork celebrating their most famous people. On our way back we cycle completely away from traffic along the Grand Union Canal towpath to Harlesden.
We start zig-zagging through quiet roads of Brondesbury and Queen’s Park, cutting through Paddington Recreational Ground. Soon we will be cycling along Little Venice and visit St Mary’s Square, where we spot the sculptures of 3 local heroes – Alan Turing, Mary Seacole, and Michael Bond, who created Paddington Bear.
We carry on cycling under the Westway where we see a ceramic panel celebrating Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who designed Paddington station, and then cross the canal at Paddington Basin using the footbridge. On the other side of the canal we will see a sculpture of Paddington Bear, beside a dynamic panel in homage to Turing.
After that we stop at the Grand Junction Café for a break, before we join the canal towpath all the way to Harlesden. We aim to be back at Roundwood Park by 5pm.
