Route Description
We’ll start with a 1.5-mile climb out of Penicuik before turning onto a quieter moor road that leads us to West Linton. Here, we’ll experience the expansive views of the Pentland Hills and surrounding countryside, with rolling terrain that’s ideal for enjoying the open landscape. After passing through West Linton, we’ll join a brief, busier stretch on the Moffat Road as we make our way to Whitmuir Café for a well-deserved break.

Following our café stop, we’ll tackle Mackbiehill, a short but steep climb. You’re welcome to walk if needed—it’s a great way to catch your breath before we continue. The return journey offers a fresh perspective on the moors as we loop back to Penicuik, finishing with a descent into town.

This route is slightly exposed to the elements, so we will keep an eye on the forecast and please dress appropriately for a windy ride.

About the Route Join us for Moor with a View, a scenic 20.6-mile loop with around 1,000 feet of elevation gain. Starting from Penicuik, we’ll head through peaceful moorland roads towards West Linton. This ride offers some rewarding hill climbs, with fantastic views of the Pentland Hills and a cozy café stop at Whitmuir Café. It’s a great route for cyclists who enjoy a mix of challenge and beautiful countryside.

This route is mostly on quiet roads with short sections of busier roads.

What to Bring Bike in good working condition: Especially with 1,000 feet of elevation, it’s best to check your brakes and gears beforehand. Helmet: Strongly recommended for safety. Spare inner tube/puncture repair kit: Useful in case of a flat. Bike lock: Helpful for our stop at Whitmuir Café. Layers and a waterproof jacket: Dress in layers for weather changes, and bring a waterproof just in case. Water bottle and snacks: Stay hydrated and bring a snack for fuel. Cash or card: For refreshments at Whitmuir Café.

A Friendly Note for First-Timers This route has some moderate climbs and open moorland sections, making it perfect for cyclists comfortable with a bit of elevation and distance. We’ll keep a relaxed pace, and no one will be left behind. If you’re new to hill riding, don’t hesitate to ask for tips—this group is here to support each other!
