Historic Chiswick

A short local ride, taking in some sites of historic interest and discovering some quiet corners in the midst of a busy urban area. We will ride down to Kew Bridge and then follow the river, with glimpses of the quaint cottages and inns of Strand on the Green. Coming closer to the water again, we ride through the peaceful green space of Duke’s Meadows, where it’s hard to believe there were once industrial gravel pits. Who knew that the little road leading down to the Boat House owes its name to a manufacturer of shoe polish?! We might make a brief detour on foot to look at the new developments along Corney Reach to Chiswick Pier, before investigating the churchyard at St Nicholas Church, where we will see the impressive tomb of the famous painter and Chiswick resident William Hogarth. Then it’s time to enter the glorious grounds of Chiswick House & Gardens and head for the café.
After refreshments we make our way through the bustle of modern day Chiswick to have a look at the mural at Turnham Green station which displays the history of Chiswick and the many artists who have lived here. Then it’s a short ride through the lovely garden suburb of Bedford Park, across Acton Park, and back to Ealing Town Hall.
