Great Women of the North - In Search of Emily Wilding Davison
A Morpeth and Longhorsley circuit
Sunday 14th July 10am 30 miles
Start from Carlisle Park at Emily statue, Morpeth just in front of Carlisle Bank entrance (on street view it is just about where the white pick up is parked-note that the statue is newer than the street view image so the statue is not there!)
NE16 1YD
We suggest that if you are driving to the start you park in the Leisure Centre car park, New Market NE61 1PR which is free on a Sunday from where it is a short distance to Carlisle Park (note: we are told that cycling is not permitted in the park so please walk your bike)

We're continually inspired by the extraordinary stories of North East women. This time it’s the turn of Morpeth heroine, Emily Wilding Davison, suffragette who we all know for having tragically died while trying to pin a suffragette rosette onto the king’s horse at the Derby. Emily’s family were from the Morpeth area and there remains strong connections to the town and surrounding area with a statue of her having been erected in the town’s Carlisle Park last year. This is from where we will meet to start our 30 mile road ride via Meldon, Netherwitton, The Trench, Longhorsley and Mitford. We will stop for a coffee on the way but please bring your own packed lunch as we’ll be picnicking. (if nearer to the date of the ride the weather is lousy we’ll let you know of any change in lunch plan). We’ll be visiting Emily paraphernalia in Longhorsley and returning to visit her grave in Morpeth. So, a very fine way to spend a Sunday.

Our ride will be on road so it’s suitable for all bikes. However, we’ll be riding hybrids as we aren’t planning to race, but ride at a more social leisurely pace. With a mountain bike the distance on road might be a bit of an effort. It is for moderately confident riders and averagely hilly with about 1800’ ascent in 30 miles.

With stops we’re likely to be out for up to 7 hours. As always we can’t predict exact timings.

Please dress appropriately for the weather and if sunny bring plenty of water and sun cream.

In order for the ride to leave promptly, please be punctual so we can carry out bike checks, etc. prior to us setting off.

For any queries please contact us at [email protected] and any last minute cancellations on the day please text 07493808927 (note this phone is only for the day of the ride).
