This is another ride in our Going for Gold series to celebrate a local para–Olympian Heather Frederiksen MBE who certainly made the cut swimming the 100-metre backstroke in 2012 and is the former world record holder. Ride leaders: Lesley Doxsey & Carol Crerar. Average speed – 7-8 mph Elevation – 500 ft.

Starting at Cutacre country park car park we head off on some of the trails in the park. Following a short section on Newbrook Rd using a cycle path we then turn off into a quieter road to continue our journey into Atherton. We skirt around Atherton to join another cycle trail along Millers Lane then head on a one-way road for the centre of Leigh. After we’ve seen Heather’s gold post box, we then continue our ride heading along slightly busier roads and shared cycle paths for a welcoming café stop. After the café stop and a short distance along the main road, we head off on the Bridgewater Way canal towpath all the way to Astley Green village. After passing the Lancashire mining museum and Dam House we then tackle the first incline of the ride up Hough Lane to re-join a cycle path. We then complete the ride on quiet roads until coming back into Cutacre country park for the last few miles and a couple of inclines.

This mainly flat ride is ideal for those riders progressing from Easygoing to Steady rides and those wanting to increase their confidence on roads as about half of the ride is on quiet roads with a short stretch on a busier road.

Please arrive 10-15 mins beforehand for a quick bike check and ride briefing. If you have not completed a ride participant form previously for one of the HRS rides, please request one via email [email protected], Facebook messenger or through the let’s ride site. Please ensure your bike is in good working condition. Check your gears and brakes and if they are a little bit stiff/rusty and you are not sure how to remedy, take it to your local bike shop. They will be happy to take a look. Although helmets are only recommended by law and not deemed to be essential, anyone not wearing a helmet will not be able to join the ride unfortunately. We do have bikes and helmets to hire if required. Please bring your spare inner tubes, bike levers and pump (don’t worry about the latter if you don’t have one). A lock would be advisable for the café stop. It is essential that all ride participants carry their own PPE, that is mask, anti bac gel/wipes and tissues. First aid consumables will be provided by the leader but you will need to self-medicate if it is safe to do so.

We especially welcome newbies!
