Thanks to Breeze Network Durham for handing over the baton for PART 2 of Cycling around the Sculptures of Ray Lonsdale.

Ray Lonsdale is a steel fabricator from Durham. Tommy or ‘Eleven O One’ the soldier sculpture at Seaham is probably the most well known in this area. Ray’s collection show the sculptor’s fascination with the human form and are built from steel, and there is plenty of his work just a bike ride away. On this route we will visit five more of his sculptures - Da said ”men don’t cry”, And the Village Remains, Relative Treats, The Coxswain and Eleven O One (Tommy).

Starting at Hetton Lyons Park car park we cycle to the centre of Hetton, for the newest Ray Lonsdale sculpture Da said “Men don’t cry”, There we follow the road for a very short distance to gain access to Hetton Lyons, follow the bridleways to join NCN 1 and travel to South Hetton. With a short distance travelling on the road we find And the Village Remains and Relative Treats. A quick turn around and back onto NCN 1 we find ourselves cycling along the “Road to Know Where” next to Dalton Park, then its downhill all the way to Seaham, stopping off at The Lookout Cafe in the Marina for refreshments and food.

Once refuelled, were off to visit The Coxswain in the Marina, then back on our bikes to visit Eleven O One (Tommy) on The Green. Leaving Seaham, we follow NCN 1 on quiet roads, Bridleways, a very short dark bridge tunnel (torch needed) and the old train line until we reach Seaton. Here we follow a quiet road to South Sharpley and join NCN 70 to Windmill Hill (cycling very close to Wind Turbines), then its downhill to Hetton Lyons Park.

Bring suitable waterproof clothing as well as layers to ensure that you can cope with cold or warm weather.

Helmets are recommended, but not mandatory.
