We set off from the Open Hearth pub on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal and after a short distance join the National Cycle Route 492, an old railway line, which we follow all the way to Blaenavon, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The route takes through the Garn Lakes Country Park, before dropping down onto National Cycle Route 46, which takes us into the Clydach Gorge.
We follow Route 46 to Govilon where we re-join the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, which is a flat route all the way back to the Open Hearth where we started.
We will have a café stop at Goytre Warf.

Route rating

0 stars (0) Reviews

This is a circular route following Sustrans National Cycle Routes. The majority of the route is traffic free.

Large sections of the route are traffic free on cycle paths that follow old railway lines and canal towpaths. There are some short sections on back roads used only by local traffic. Short sections of the canal towpath can be muddy, especially after rain, therefore it's recommended that you have tyres with sufficient trad patterns to cope with a little mud.

We will have regular short stops along the route, with a planned café stop at Goytre Warf. For those that who prefer to bring there own snacks, there are large open areas adjacent to the café where you can consume your own snacks.

Please bring a drinks bottle and money for the café stop. Carry a pump, tyre levers, puncture repair kit and spare inner tube.

We never leave anyone behind
