Breezing a Bit of Velo
Saturday 31st Aug 10am 31 miles
Start Broompark Picnic Site DH7 7RJ
Inspired by the Velo we’ve devised our own Breeze adventure following some of the route of the sportive (taking place the day after our ride). In the spirit of that event we’ve included a few hills but what else would you expect in County Durham. You’ll need to be a fairly confident rider as it is a decent distance with hills.
We’ll meet at Broompark initially riding up the Deerness Valley Railway path. At Waterhouses we’ll join the Velo route and head up out of the valley via Buttons Bank to Stanley Crook. From the tops here we’ll pass Crook Golf Club and head through North Bitchburn and Toronto to a lunch stop in Bishop Auckland. Onwards through Kirk Merrington, Middlestone and Ferryhill where we’ll veer off the Velo to return to Broompark taking in Metal Bridge, Hett, Sunderland Bridge, Scripton Gill and Brandon.
We’ll be pedalling a mix of on and off road so a hybrid is the best bike for this ride. Off road bits include the Deerness Valley Railway path and the bridleway from Sunderland Bridge to Scripton Gill.
Please come suitably dressed for the weather conditions whatever they will be like at the end of August.
For any last minute cancellations on the day please text 07493808927 (note this phone is only for the day of the ride) otherwise use the option to cancel when you log in to letsride.co.uk.
In order for the ride to leave promptly, please be punctual so we can carry out bike checks, etc. prior to us setting off. Make sure your bike is in working condition and bring a spare tube to fit your tyres. We should be out for about 6 hours but as always it is difficult to be precise about timing.
Hope you can join us for a fun, friendly ride with a challenge thrown in. If you want any more information email us at
[email protected].
