- This is a good opportunity for those of us living in urban areas to cycle out in the countryside on scenic quiet roads. Considering this is the famously hilly Chilterns, this is a fairly flat ride (ok if you’re from Hillingdon you might think it is hilly! – it’s all relative!). This is aimed at hybrid bikes - if you come on a road bike you will need to be prepared to go more slowly as hybrids are slower. We will ride at the pace of the slowest rider and always wait so that no one is left behind.
- We will cycle mainly on quiet roads to the Community Café at Wigginton where the toilet is open (inside the café – so you need a mask), via Copperkins Ln, Hyde Heath, The Lee, Swan Bottom, Cholesbury https://ridewithgps.com/routes/34360818 Back a similar route, so about 800ft of climbing, but no major hills. If people want more, I can chuck in an extra 4 miles on delightful wooded lanes.
- You can take your bike anywhere on the Metropolitan Line off-peak Mon-Fri (peak hours are 7:30-9:30 and 16:00-19:00). For info see
https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/cycling/cycling-in-london/bikes-on-public-transport
There is a Chiltern Railways train from Harrow on the Hill at 9:39 which arrives in Amersham at 10:02 then you can cycle easily to the start. From Northwood station there is a Met Line tube at 9:35, arriving at 9:54.
- Or it takes 30 mins to drive from most towns within Hillingdon borough.
- If you want me to meet you at the underground station and cycle with you to the start, that is fine, message me the previous day and we will meet a little earlier.
- Please bring a pump, water, credit card and at least 1 spare inner tube. But don’t go overboard bringing heavy gear, as everything feels even heavier when cycling up those hills! You won’t need a heavy lock as we will be sitting outside in sight of the bikes at Wigginton. I would prefer that you wear a helmet for your own safety.
- Please check your bike thoroughly before you come. Check your brakes are working well, your gears are smooth and your tyres are in good condition and pumped up – you can use this video. https://www.sustrans.org.uk/our-blog/get-active/2019/everyday-walking-and-cycling/the-m-check-for-your-bike-in-11-steps If that one is too technical then try this easier one https://youtu.be/u0dtGe-LrcQ
- If you, or anyone in your household, are feeling at all unwell with possible symptoms of Covid-19 such as new persistent cough, high temperature, loss of sense of taste or smell, please cancel your place.
- If you have any questions don’t hesitate to message me.
