Starting point

PL16 0JH

We will leave the Village Green turning right up a short steep section before dropping down to join the road to the Roadford dam. We pass the Visitors Centre and climb up to the windmill before turning left to towards Bratton Clovelly. A mile or so later we turn left again and navigate the 3 switchbacks to the head of Roadford Lake. We then take the longish climb up away from the Lake, skirting around Germans Week until we get to Upcott Cross. Here we turn left to make the run back past the old Ivyhouse school to drop steadily downhill towards St Giles. At the bottom of Tower Hill we take a left up a small lane, the easier hill to start our climb back up onto the ridge. We turn left at the crossroads and head towards Dubbs Cross and from there we retrace our route to Ivyhouse school where we turn right and make our way, with a few undulations through Grinnacombe Moor to pick up the right turn back to Broadwoodwidger.

This ride is a friendly group on a steady 22 mile ride through the West Devon countryside. The ride will be undulating with a few steady hills. We will circle Roadford Reservoir in an anticlockwise direction before dropping down to St Giles and climbing steadily back to Broadwoodwidger. Please take a minute to look at British Cycling’s guidance regarding cycling activity during Covid-19 before booking on this ride Here is a link to frequently asked Questions about riding during these times

We will mostly be riding on narrow West Devon country lanes which are quiet but have potholes. There will be views across to Dartmoor and of Roadford Reservoir. As the roads are narrow we stop if we need to let farm vehicles past. We ask that you to ride in single file and maintain 2 bike lengths from the person in front of you at all times, including at junctions.

We will stop for photos and energy intake. There is no planned toilet stop on this route although the toilets at the Roadford Visitors Centre may be open.

We require you to wear a helmet if you are riding with us. Please make sure that you bike is mechanically sound and that you carry at least one spare inner tube for your bike as well as means to inflate it. Please also bring a bottle of drink to take on your ride and any energy bars or sweets that you might need. To comply with COVID-19 Restrictions please bring a mask, gloves and hand sanitiser with you and sanitise your hands before and after your ride. Weather permitting we will have socially distanced refreshments and chat on the village green post ride so please bring with you whatever you would like to eat and drink. Refreshments are not to be shared between participants.
