Monica Mehers set up this Group to encourage cyclists out on social cycle rides that are open to all abilities and non-competitive. Those who enjoy our group are generally able to dedicate one or two days a month at a weekend to enjoy the exercise and the company of others. Members ride with other groups as well and indeed if our group doesn't suit there’s lots of information about other groups whose style, location, riding frequency and pace may suit better. If you need to regain confidence on a bike then you might consider joining one of Monica’s Wed evening rides of shorter duration during the Summer months to end Sept. Our routes plan to stay on Roads and Cycle Paths. Very occasionally, we use metalled tracks, so members generally ride lighter ‘straight handlebar’ hybrids with road tyres or Road Bikes with what used to be called ‘racing handlebars’. Some use straps or clips on the pedals and some keep it simple. A couple of fit ones use heavy Mountain Bikes with suspension and even nobly tyres but they take a lot more energy to pedal on the road! Some find some lycra to be practical and comfortable and some wouldn't be seen dead in it! Cycle Helmets are strongly encouraged. Historically, we average 10.5 -12mph and we generally ride for 60 to 90 minutes before a tea stop and about the same on the way back. We ride further if the mood takes us but it’s not unusual on these ones for some to plan a shorter return route. All our regular cycle rides start from The Saxon, Sheep Street normal departure time generally 09:45hrs unless notified. By joining the cycle rides, we hope you'll make new friends and maybe get other rides going yourselves. Regular rides are planned for the First Sunday (shorter) and Third Saturday of each month - 20-40 miles but adjusted to the mood of the day. E-Mails and Pinned posts on our Facebook Page let you know the next organised cycle ride details, usually with the route. We also aim to run some very gentle rides for the less confident and some 'ladies only' rides which may be run in conjunction with British Cycling's Breeze Rides. Nowadays, we keep the FB Page for regular those who cycle with us regularly. If you'd like cycling help, advice or guidance, please contact us by E-Mail (details below or through our page). If we don't know the answer we can usually point you in the right direction. No bike? No excuse. Try as they hire bikes out, the local papers/websites for a good second-hand bike or my preference would be to go to one of the big bike shops in Oxford and get a good second-hand one that’s the right size for you and feels comfortable (then ride it back or take the X5 bus back to Bicester - it can accommodate two bikes inside each trip! If you need a chat, say when it’s convenient to call you. You have made the first step. Please tell us if you expect to come on our next ride and we'll look out for you. Good Luck.
